TWO LIVES, TWO WORLD WARS is a companion volume to Ted Parrish’s ECHOES OF OLD WATFORD, BUSHEY & OXHEY.
TWO LIVES, TWO WORLD WARS tracks the lives and times of father and son, Reginald and Ted Parrish from their early days in Richmond, Surrey and Oxhey, Watford respectively, to their parallel yet contrasting lives and experiences during the two World Wars and beyond.
Read Reginald’s first-hand account of the X Beach landings at Gallipoli during the Dardanelles Campaign. As a member of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), 29th Division, 86th Brigade, he was one of the first to land in that ill-fated campaign on 25 April 1915, where he witnessed dreadful scenes. See his hastily drawn watercolours painted during his service on the Western Front in 1918.
His son Ted’s Royal Air Force service in the Burma Campaign encompassed almost four years, extending six months beyond VE Day. During that time, Ted spent two years four months with bomber and fighter-bomber 113 Squadron RAF at the time of the concurrent Battles of Imphal and Kohima between March and July 1944 after escaping with his life.
Read Ted’s first-hand accounts of the trials and tribulations of service life in the RAF in South East Asia Command during World War II from letters to his then-pen friend. See his satirical cartoons, drawn in India and Burma.
Life on the home fronts in Richmond and Watford, Bushey and Oxhey during wartime is explored, as are Ted’s numerous post-war activities that included dedicated membership of Watford Ciné Society and Oxhey Village Environment Group, and the founding of Kings Jazz Club.
Ted captured the decimation of local historic and architecturally interesting buildings in his sound films, including A Town Without History, Memories of Watford, Bushey in the Early '70s, Oxhey Village, Oxhey at the Crossroads, Border Country and Digging Up the Past. He considered the ongoing and unstoppable destruction as ‘acts of architectural genocide’.
TWO LIVES, TWO WORLD WARS can be purchased from 26th October 2026 at the TWO LIVES SHOP on this website and Amazon.
